Slavery has existed as far back as human history goes. It's likely that it was practiced in human prehistory as well. More specifically the trade of African slaves goes far back into ancient history. The Egyptians are perhaps the oldest civilization to enslave black Africans, although they did not limit their trade with just that one ethnicity.
The slave trade continued for several reasons. Firstly, there was a high demand for cheap labor on plantations and in industries, particularly in the Americas. Secondly, the profitability of the slave trade created economic incentives for its continuation. Finally, societal and racial prejudices allowed for the dehumanization and exploitation of enslaved people, making it easier for the trade to persist.
