Marie Antoinette was hated by her people because she was:
She was often "loud" and "uncouth" according to French standards. ( The French standards were grace and etiquette)
Marie was hated by her people, firstly because they wasn't French, she was Austrian, and also because she always threw big parties and balss, not caring how much they costed. she had an arranged marriage with Louis, who was the complete opposite person to her. she was 'sold off' to France at such an early age, and to a husband who was cold and unresponsive, although they did grow to love each other. She had no concept of the real world, and acted like the foolish young girl she was - throwing grand parties, and acting in stage performances, setting up her own village in the grounds of her Petit Trianon.
and can i just say that she never actually said the fampus quote everyone knows her for- 'let them eat cake', she was just misquoted. She grew up eating Brioche - which is a sweet bread. When told the people were starving, she said why don't they eat bread (and as the only bread she was used to was cake-like) she was misquoted.
She represented a world of waste and excess during a time when the 'common people' had to little. She stood for a class of people that seemed incapable of thinking about the welfare of others. The oft misquoted line of " Let them eat cake" when the people complained of not have enough bread to eat, sums it up. ( She never said the line )

She was Austrian, a country that France had been in war with for years. The French did not want a foreigner on the throne, especially not an Austrian.
Also, even before she came to France, the revolution was already smouldering because of the financial disasters of Louis XIV and Louis XV which they caused to the national treasury. France was already almost bankrupt when Marie Antoinette stepped in the picture, and because the French needed someone to blame it all on, and she was Austrian, she was the perfect victim. The people tried to make all of France believe that she had no concern for her people, spending money on wigs and dresses and throwing wild parties while the population was starving and desperate.
The people did believe it, although she was completely innocent and killed her and her husband, destroying the whole French monarchy and the French credibility all around the world for as far as the French had that anyway.
At the very core of the problem was a fatal and irrerversible birth defect.
European Monarchy had tried in vain to end the rivalry between Nations by marrying off their sons and daughters to their neighbors in the hope of bringing some form of War Free stability to the area. It seldom worked.
Marie Antoinette was born an Austrian, the child would always be seen not as French but as the sister of the King of Austria and a probable spy on his behalf.
Her Austrian birth was at the root of her failure as the Queen of France. No matter how much effort she put into trying to be all that she could be for France, she was routinely libeled and blamed for things over which she had no control. If she dressed like a French Queen she was considered a spendthrift. It she wore the clothing of a French peasant, she was charged with mocking them.
The longest lasting libel may be the often Quoted retort to the bread crisis of "Let Them Eat Cake". It remains a part of her legacy today. It is a statement that she never made, and she was aware of, and sympathetic to the needs and desires of the French people.

Madame Du Barry was the official mistress of Louis XV and therefore his little spoiled darling. Madame Du Barry wanted to be acknowledged at court, but nobody did. The only reason courtiers spoke to her was to please the King. Madame Du Barry wanted Marie Antoinette to speak to her desperately, but because Marie Antoinette (being the dauphine) was way higher in rank, it was not allowed for Madame Du Barry to speak to her first. She had to wait until Marie Antoinette would say a few words directed to her, before she was allowed to speak back. Marie Antoinette learned that Madame Du Barry had been a prostitute in previous years and was a provocative woman. Marie Antoinette found it hard to believe that such a woman with such a history and such behaviour was allowed at court, let alone be the King's mistress. Marie Antoinette's evil three aunts (the sisters of Louis XV) spurred her on not ever to speak word to her. Madame Du Barry complained, cried, and begged Louis XV to order Marie Antoinette to speak to her, but she kept refusing. Eventually, when Empress Maria Theresia (Marie Antoinette's mother) sent Marie Antoinette a very angry letter in which she harshly told her daughter how foolish she was to keep her mouth shut to the woman, she gave in. Her exact words eventually were: "there are many people today at Versailles" and she said it not directly looking at Madame Du Barry but standing next to her. That was all she would ever say to her. Madame Du Barry was pleased. Marie Antoinette later said "that woman will never again hear the sound of my voice". And she kept word.
