The Japanese didn't want to get into a war with the US. The plan was to take out Pearl Harbor, a major U.S. naval base, unexpectedly, thus crippling the giant and keeping them out of Japan's hair while Japan went on to conquer East Asia.

It was also the Japanese intention to take control of the Philippines which meant that they would have to oppose the United States at some point. They chose to make it an engagement on their terms as opposed to one where the Americans could have a strong showing.

Because the United States cut off critical trade, like iron ore and oil, to Japan. Japan needed these resources to fuel their expansion. the United States cut off trade with Japan in response to the Japanese expansion into Manchuria and other parts of the Pacific. Japan felt it had to cripple the United States navy (in the attack on Pearl Harbor) in order to expand freely in the Pacific. They figured they would have 18 months after the surprise attack to expand in the Pacific; however, the United States was able to halt Japanese expansion 6 months after the surprise attack.
