World War 2 had been in progress for five years prior to D-Day. The Allied forces had gained the upper hand in naval battles in the Atlantic and North Africa, and the next logical step in winning the war was to liberate the European mainland. Several other invasions took place to do so, such as operation Market Garden and the invasion of Italy, but D-Day is the most famous because it was the most successful.
