The red star was the communist insignia. The white star is the US insignia. Although US Servicemen didn't wear the white star on their uniforms, we had it painted on almost everything else (jeeps, tanks, ships, airplanes, etc.). Each nation's military has it's own method and style of wearing their uniforms. For example, the Soviet (Russian) steel helmet was shaped differently than the US steel helmet...to look different, and be able to tell who was on which side when encountered on the battlefield. During the Vietnam War, US GI's often kept captured NVA Pith Helmets & brass belt buckles as war souvenirs; especially when they had RED STARS engraved or attached to them.
