The Romans did not paint on canvas like later Europeans. They probably did not have canvases. Instead they did frescoes. These were murals where watercolour paints were applied on fresh plaster. When the plaster dried, the fresco was incorporated into the wall. The Romans were not the only ones who did this; other ancient societies, such as the Egyptians, Greeks and Etruscans, also painted frescoes. Many pre-historic societies also did wall paintings. Frescoes were still widely painted even during the Renaissance (14th to the 16th century), even though painters had already started painting on canvas and did so very frequently. It was still a means of decorating walls.
