For another thing, the charters that were soon given by the authorities to various settlement-companies set aside portions of North American territory for each: the company that backed the Puritan-settlements received Massachusetts as its designated area.
They wanted to avoid religious persecution ( mistreated ) so they fled to Massachusetts for religious freedom.
Actually, it wasn't thousands who came, but 60 people from the same English town. They felt that they wanted to follow their religion instead of the Church of England .
