Statehood carries with it a number of advantages for any state, not just Hawaii. You get an automatic free trade agreement with all the other American states - no tariffs. And you get influence in the US government, which is probably more significant than the influence that you would be able to exert as an independent nation. In the case of Hawaii, there is also a huge US naval base at Pearl Harbor, which is economically significant. The naval base spends lots of money. And of course, there is a certain amount of security involved in being part of the US, which is the world's greatest military power.
