Overpopulation. Cities had limited agricultural land, and a rising population amongst people who had no television to keep them busy at night, outstripped the available, generally poor, land. So the surplus was shipped off progressively to take land and form cities around the Mediterranean and Black Sea coasts. After a while even some of these colonies also became overpopulated and themselves sent out colonies.
The began exporting surplus populations from about 900 CE onwards. Eventually there were about 2000 cities established around the Mediterrana and Black Seas, from today's Spain in the west to Asia Minor in the east. For example Naples (in Greek nea polis = New City) in Italy was a Greek city, as was Tripoli in Libya (tri polis= three cities), Miletus in Asia Minor.
Many cities sent out colonies when their population exceeded the land capacity of the parent city. There were several hundred. And some of these colonies in turn outgrew the capacity of their land then also sent out colonies. Some well known ones are Athens (Miletus), Corinth (Corfu), Sparta (Taranto). However some colonies were set up by a consortium of cities anxious to get rid of a surplus and also get rid of potential problem-makers.
They first spread to the east in Asia Minor as overpopulated cities sent out their surplus people to establish new cities for themselves. Then they sent them to the west as far as Sicily, Spain and North Africa, and east around the Black Sea. Eventually there were over 2,000 cities which comprised the Greek world.
