Germany became A fascist country because of the rise in power of Adolf Hitler. He had joined the German Workers Party when it was a small political group and started to make them popular by making speeches which reflected the German nation, who were reeling from their defeat in WW1. Hitlers main belief was that is was the fault of the Jewish people had made them lose the war and he had always thought that other races had been ruining their country. When Hitler was installed as leader of Germany he made himself dictator of the nation and started attacking the race he hated so much, the Jews. Nobody attempted to oppose him since many people aggreed with his ideals. He formed the SS, secret police to hunt down Jews and created concentration camps tp deal with them.

In Germany in the 1920's, they were just trying out "democracy" for the first time. They had always had kings and emperors telling them what to do going back for centuries and centuries. There wasn't much of a middle class- most people were really rich/aristocratic, or really poor. So this new politics thing they were trying out, people tended to gravitate towards extremes- either communist/socialist parties on the far left, or fascist/nationalist parties on the far right. There were even far right "monarchist" parties that preferred how things were when there were kings and emperors. But with no influential middle class, and no democratic traditions, Germany's system was doomed to be dominated by radicals.

Germany also made the mistake of setting up a political system that tended to cause problems rather than correct them. Their system was (and to a degree still is) set up sort of similar to Britain's- you don't really vote for candidates, you vote for parties, and then the parties choose who rules. Germany's system was even more confusing because it used a complicated system involving lists and percentages that I won't try to explain here. If that wasn't complicated enough, there were also lots of political parties- there were well over 30 parties in the 1930 elections!

As you can tell, it was very complicated and made it so that it was difficult to get anything done- no party was ever really able pull a majority of seats in the Reichstag (their version of Congress/Parliament), and other parties would oppose their efforts. So there was a series of weak chancellors who were unable to get much done. The President, who wasn't really supposed to have a significant role in government (a lot like how the Queen is in Britain now), did have special "emergency powers" that he could use during an emergency- and the President, a very old World War I general and famous hero, was forced to use his "emergency powers" a lot in order to get anything done.

So when the Great Depression hit after 1929, Germany was particularly hard hit. Their system didn't work. Radicals on both sides were gaining in popularity. In the 1930 election, the Nazis (far right fascists) and the Social Democrats (socialists) emerged as the two largest parties, even though neither could manage to get a majority of seats. The Nazis were eventually able to take advantage of the continuing instability and, using a byzantine web of intrigue, backstabbing, streetfighting and broken promises, were able to forge an alliance with another right-wing party to get Hitler made Chancellor in January 1933. From there until 1945, the Nazis dominated German politics. They were able to pass laws making their way the only way, and brutally enforced it.
