Basically it was all about the money. Although fame could also be linked to his decision. It was not heroism if that is what you were thinking. Christopher Columbus believed that the world was smaller than it really is and therefore he can find short sea routes to India, Indonesia, Japan and China.

By discovering such a route, Columbus hoped to increase his own wealth and the future prosperity of his family, either be rewards of the King and Queen of Spain, or by business dealings with spices, drugs, gold, and silver.
