After the Geneva Conventions in 1954 Vietnam was split into two, North Vietnam (communists) and South Vietnam (democrats). The leader of the North was Ho Chi Minh. The leader of the South was Prime Minister Ngo Dinh Diem, who was later elected president of South Vietnam; and overthrown by his own general in a coup d'tat in 1963. Nguyen Van Thieu took over, as leader of South Vietnam, for the remainder of the war.
Beacuse they were protesting agiant the harsh Government of Diem Dien Phu who was was a tyrannical leader of South Vietnam, put in place by the Americans.
Ho chi minh is widely regarded as the national 'saviour' of vietnam by the vietnamese, leading the unification of vietnam against the french, south vietnam government and americans. Introducing communism, and being influenced by other soviet states such as China and the USSR

It was both a civil war and a surrogate war with China and the USSR supporting North Vietnam and the US, South Korea, Australia, New Zeland, Thailand and the Phillipenes supporting South Vietnam.
Ngo Dinh Diem was the leader of South Vietnam until he was assassinated in November of 1963

the aussies were alies and fought in the Vietnam war with the Americans. (and of course the South Vietnamese - the Americans were paticipants on their side).
