America did not lose the Vietnam police action.
In 1975 the South Vietnamese lost their civil war with North Vietnam two years after the American withdrawal.
The North violated their Peace Treaty an invaded South Vietnam and were able to defeat the South Vietnamese militarily.
There were two "Limited Wars" (limited wars have boundries and restrictive rules) fought by our nation. The first was Korea, the second was Vietnam. Terrain dictates how wars are fought. Korea was a peninsula surrounded on three sides by the sea. Korea was easy to CONTAIN, as the US Navy controlled the sea. Therefore, the communists (North Korea) could only re-supply from their northern border, across which lay Red (Communist) China. The US was able to hold the line in Korea and stop the communists at the 38th parallel, which still exists today. Vietnam was different. It was not a peninsula. The Ho Chi Minh trail was actually a road net work. Not just one trail. The communists kept their supply of men and material coming thru those networks via Cambodia and Laos. Bombed into a lunar landscape, attacked by US ground troops, the enemy just kept coming. Unless the US widened the war by involving more countries to destroy the source of the men and material, the war would go on indefinitely, which it was doing anyway. So with casualties and material losses skyrocketing and the US public at home turning against it's own men, the decision was made to end it.

In a phrase: The Vietnam War. America was becoming more and more ambivalent about Vietnam, seeing it as an "un-winnable" war, and then Walter Cronkite did a special report on it from Vietnam. Cronkite's conclusion was pretty much that it was essentially a dead heat that was going nowhere, and Cronkite was known at that time as "The most trusted man in America". After watching the report, Johnson said: "If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost America".
Most of the hippies and liberals did not support the Vietnam. that's why we pulled out of Vietnam during the war. we did not pull out in world war one and world war 2 because america was geared in for the war, but Vietnam, not all of america was in for it.
We didn't win the war, HOWEVER, with the anger of the people in America and tons of riots we left, when we left South Vietnam fell shortly to the communists. Though many say we just lost.
