There are two reasons why there are many parks located in the west.
The first is that, unlike the east, the west was largely undeveloped; there were many large, uninhabited tracts of land when many national parks were being created in the late 19th and the early 20th centuries.
The second reason is that conservation efforts, especially in the early days, were directed toward protecting forests and watersheds. The mountainous west was ideal for these efforts.
While the east has its share of national parks and monuments, these tend to be smaller and more historically significant. Unfortunately, relatively little has been done to protect prairieland.
There are so many of them streched throughout the US but most of the big ones are out west. There are about 390 National Park Service sites in the U.S.

There are no national PARKS in West Virginia, but there are some lovely areas administered by the National Parks Service. Also some nice area within national forests, as well as state parks.
Yes and no. The designation "National Park" applies to more sites in the west than in the east, and more land area is certainly under the designation national park in the west. However, more sites managed by the National Park Service are in the east; these tend to be monuments, historic sites, etc., rather than national parks.
If one counts any state west of the Mississippi River as a "western" state, and include Minnesota in that list, then, of the 59 parts of the National Parks Service designated as national PARKS, 43 are in the west. This includes one in American Samoa, eight in Alaska, and two in Hawaii.
Not entirely, although some of the most beautiful ones are located in the Midwestern United States, but they are all over the United States.

Olympic National Park is in Washington, west of Seattle.
When the national park movement began, many of the first national parks were set aside in pristine wilderness areas, and most of those areas were in unsettled places in the west. It was relatively easy to set aside large areas of land because few people lived in those areas compared with the east. It was much more controversial when national parks were established in the east, such as Shenandoah National Park, which forced many people already living there out of their homes.
