The first known Australians, excluding the indigenous people of Australia, were the convicts, officers and marines of the First Fleet. However, these people could not be said to be Australians, as they considered themselves British through and through. Whilst the continent received many visitors from other countries prior to British settlement, none of them stayed.

Among the British and other permanent settlers in Australia, the term Australian was not applied for decades. In the early years, those born in the country were called "currency lads and lasses". Australia as a country was not formed until 1901, so in effect, there were no Australian citizens until that time.

Why did Kevin Rudd say sorry to the aboriginals?

Kevin Rudd said sorry to the Aboriginals for the Stollen Generation. The Stollen Generation was where the Aboriginal children were taken away from their homes and they had to go to schools to be taught the 'right way' or the 'Australian' way. Kevin Rudd also said sorry for taking their land. Captain cook was the first Australian to go on Australia but he wasn't the first one. The first people were the Aboriginals. Captain COok just INTRODUCED the kland to Australians and now the Australians think the country is theirs which is why Kevin Rudd apologised. I hope my answer was reasonable, enjoy!!!
