Governor Spotswood of Virginia and a party of adventurers were the first Europeans to see what is now West Virginia. They rode to the top of the Appalachian mountains and looked down into the green valleys. Governor Spotswood gave each of the members of the party a small golden horseshoe to commemorate the event. Today, the top 220 students of West Virginia History are awarded a golden horseshoe each year in commemoration of the event. Faith Marko
