It is normally said that Napoleon was defeated in Russia by "General Winter".

In other words, he was defeated by lack of food in an area which was devoid of supplies for his army at the beginning of a typical Russian winter.

Napoleon was also prevented from moving to areas which contained food by watchful Russian armies who would not allow a full scale battle but attacked small, isolated groups, (he was almost captured by Cossacks at one point).

Marshal Kutuzov fought Napoleon at Borodino but it remains true that no army and no General truly won at Borodino. He did defeat a part of Napoleon's Army at Smolensk and was granted the victory title of His Serene Highness Prince Smolensky.
