That title first became official in 1821 with Major General Jacob Brown assuming the post. Prior to that time the position was called United States Army Senior Officer. General George Washington's official title was Continental Army General and Commander in Chief. Major General Henry Knox suceeded Washington with the simple title of Senior Officer.

Major John Doughty was the first to serve as the United States Army Senior Offocer from 20 June 1784 until 12 August 1784 when all of the Army was discharged except for 80 men.
