The first person to circumnavigate the earth was Magellan's Basque navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano, Magellan himself was killed in the Philippines and did not complete the voyage. Elcano took command and completed the voyage Magellan began.

In fact, Magellan had travelled eastwards to the Malay Peninsula on an earlier voyage, so he became the first explorer to cross all of the meridians of the globe.

The Portuguese sailor, Ferdinand Magellan, was the first navigator to lead an expedition that eventually circumnavigated the Earth. Magellan was killed in the Philippines, so he never actually accomplished the feat. Only a handful of sailors made it back to Spain, becoming the first Europeans to travel around the world. It is believed, however, that Magellan's slave, Enrique, was originally from the Philippines (since he could speak the local dialect when Magellan's fleet arrived) making him the first person to ever make a complete circumnavigation of the world when he stepped foot there. He later deserted the fleet in Cebu and led an ambush on one of the fleet's landing parties after Magellan was killed, and Enrique was refused his freedom.

In modern history, the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan's expedition of 1519-1522 became the first to circumnavigate the globe, though Magellan died en route when he was slain at the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines. Captain Sebastian Elcano finished Magellan's journey.

Some historians speculate that Enrique of Malacca, a.k.a. Henry the Black, a native of the Malay Archipelago and Magellan's indentured servant, was the first, having first been brought to Europe during an earlier voyage to the East Indies. This theory is, however, disputed.

There are theories, but no conclusive proof, that ancient Chinese mariners may have circumnavigated the globe centuries, or even millennia before Europeans achieved this feat. A large, heavy stone anchor from a Chinese ship was recently discovered off the coast of California, near Big Sur.
