Tom Selfridge was a first lieutenant in the US Army, who joined Alexander Graham Bell's Aerial Experiment Association (AEA) at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt. (The other members were Glenn Curtiss, Frederick Baldwin, J.A.D. McCurdy, and Bell himself.) In 1907 and 1908, Selfridge worked with the team on aeronautics designs. He piloted the "June Bug" and also the "White Wing" and was the 1st US soldier ever to fly an airplane.

On Sept 17, 1908, at Fort Meyer, VA, Tom Selfridge flew with Orville Wright. After a few minutes, the airplane plane crashed from a height of 60 feet (~19 meters). Wright survived with rib and leg injuries. Selfridge broke his skull and died after 3 hours. He was buried with full military honors.
