James Meredith was the first African American to attend the University of Mississippi; however, if you are going to answer the question of the first, black man to attend college, the furthest I can find is 1870 - when a former slave by the name of James Webster Smith was admitted into the United States Military Academy at West Point. He did not graduate; however, 3 years later Henry O. Flipper was admitted... in which he graduated in 1877 as West Points first blackgraduate.
