Richard III and Henry VII. Henry VII had a weak claim to the throne through his mother and decided he wanted to be King. He went up against Richard and killed Richard in Battle and claimed the throne. Henry VII was the father of Margaret (Later Margaret of Scotland), Arthur (later King of England, dies young), and Henry (Later Henry VIII after the death of Arthur and Henry VII)

The War of the Roses spanned about three decades and was fought basically by two families and their respective allies over who would be King of England. During those decades, different leaders from each family arose at different times who were very important.

The two families were the English houses of Lancaster, represented by the red rose, and York, represented by the white rose. The leaders of the each family was the Duke of Lancaster and the Duke of York. As each duke died or ceased to be duke for whatever reason, a new duke from the same family would take his place.

The House of Lancaster (an offshoot of the House of Plantagenet) placed three kings on the English throne: Henry IV, Henry V, and Henry VI.

The House of York (also an offshoot of the House of Plantagenet) produced three Kings: Edward IV, Edward V, and Richard III.
