John Dalton (1766 1844) was a British chemist and physicist, and is best known for his work on gasses and the atomic theory.

Dalton's Law states that the total pressure of a gas mixture is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of all the constituent gasses.

Dalton's contribution to the atomic theory served as the foundation for modern chemistry.

Dalton's atomic theory suggested that:

• different elements have atoms of different weights, and that all atoms of a given element are identical
• atoms form compounds in the same relative quantities, and their relative ratios are always integers
• atoms are indestructible

He proposed the atomic theory, that atoms were like a huge mass of evenly distributed negative charges containing electrons whose positive charges were uniformly spread within.

You can think of a big piece of cake with raisins stuck into it. Preferably then it has come to be known as the "plum pudding" model

John Dalton used evidence from his experiments with gases to show that there are many types of atoms, not just one kind. He came up with the concept of elements and compounds. He thought incorrectly that gas elements such as oxygen come as single atoms which can't be broken.

His atomic theory has since been superseded.
