The truth is that native American populations occupied every part of North, Central and South America. In the USA every modern state had native Americans living there before 1800, it was their land and they were the original, native inhabitants.
Anyone touring Connecticut or New York State today will have difficulty in visualising what those areas were like in the 1600s, but most of the native populations have either been wiped out, confined to small reservations or moved westwards to Oklahoma or north into Canada.

Plains Native Americans - who generally occupied the great plains. 3. Desert Native Americans - who generally occupied the desert areas of the great plains and rocky mountains. 4. Western Woodland Native Americans - (sometimes called 'bug eaters' (derogatory reference), who occupied the northern coastal areas of the woodlands.
