Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo started the revolt that eventually became the Mexican War of Independence (1810-1821) against Spain. He however, was quickly captured and executed in 1811 by Royalist forces. Other generals, such as Vicente Guerrero and Guadalupe Victoria continued the effort until its conclusion in 1821.
