Hadrian was the emperor who followed Trajan and inherited the Roman Empire when it was at its greatest extent. He is known for his consolidating of the empire, his traveling, and his many building projects, the Pantheon, the villa at Tivoli, and Hadrian's Wall were some of his projects. He is also the emperor who had to put down the Bar Kochba revolt and imposed the restrictions on the Jews.

Hadrian was the 14th Roman emperor. He reigned from 117 -- 10 July 138. He was considered a wise, just and peaceful emperor. He pursued a policy of peace. He decided to return the territories which Trajan, his predecessor, had conquered from Persia, (Armenia and Mesopotamia (Iraq), as part of peace negotiations with the Persians. He considered these conquests untenable and did not want titanic wars against the powerful Persians. He withdrew from Scotland, probably because he thought that war in the difficult highlands of Scotland was not worth it, and built Hadrian's wall to protect the Roman province of Britannia (England and Wales) from attacks by the Picts of Scotland. He also built other permanent fortifications along the frontiers of the empire.

Hadrian travelled extensively around the empire. He spent almost half of his reign away from Rome. . He wanted to strengthen the empire by commissioning infrastructure works and consulting the troops in the Roman provinces. It preferred this to war with the neighbours of the empire. He built aqueducts, baths and theatres. He commissioned the rebuilding of the famous temple of the pantheon in Rome and built a magnificent villa near Rome (at Tivoli). Hadrian loved the Greeks and was well versed with Greek philosophy and literature. He wrote poems in Latin and Greek. He endeavoured to make Roman more humane and abolished torture.

However, Hadrian was the opposite of wise, just and peaceful in Judea. He decided to rebuild Jerusalem, which had been destroyed by the Romans in the First Roman-Jewish War of 66--73. He agreed to allow the rebuilding of the Second (Jewish) Temple, but then decided build a temple dedicated to Jupiter (the chief Roman god) on its site instead. He had a forum built and had a temple dedicated to Venus built there. He also forbade circumcision, which the Romans considered barbaric. This caused a massive rebellion, the Bar-Kokhba Revolt (132-135 BC). Hadrian had to call troops from elsewhere in the empire. The rebellion was put down, but the Romans suffered heavy losses. The death toll for the Jews was even higher. In the three years of fighting 58 towns and 985 villages were said to have been destroyed. After this Hadrian tried to stamp out Judaism. He banned the Torah and the Hebrew calendar, had the sacred scroll burnt and executed Jewish scholars. The Jews were not allowed into the Jerusalem, which he renamed Aelia Capitolina (after the name of his clan and that of the god Jupiter Optimus Capitolinus). He also abolished the name Judea and replaced it with Syria Palaestina (after the Philistines).
