Nefertiti is one of the most famous women of the ancient world, and was the chief wife of the "heretic" Pharaoh Akhenaten. It is unclear who Nefertiti´s parents were. They may have been of noble or common birth, and may even have been foreign nationals.
We do not know for sure. A popular scientific theory is that she came from a prominent family of Egyptian priests (Egyptian priests were free to marry) and that she was the daughter of the high priest Ay who later was to become pharaoh himself. Another theory is that she came from a ruling-class Hittite family, so from an area that roughly is now Syria/Lebanon.
