The Renaissance is French for "rebirth". The name for this period was created over time by historians and it is difficult to say "he did it" as many people used it at different times in history and in different languages ( where it would be called something else of course. )

Also, there has been much debate among historians as to the usefulness of Renaissance as a term and as a historical delineation.

Some have called for an end to the use of the term, which they see as the use of history to validate and glorify modern ideals.

The short answer is "We called it the Renaissance". ( We being mostly Europeans who lived after the period.)
