many people during the civil that we wouldn't even suspect, slaves themselves helped the fight, Abraham Lincoln obviously, people think or try to say it was only a political move but truth was 'Honest Abe' wanted to end slavery long before he was in office. every Union soldier weather he thought so or not helped free the slaves, the 54th Massachusetts regiment which was/is one of the most renown regiments of the civil war is a perfect example of the combination of people working together for this common cause. every slave that escaped and told his tale helped, every writer, abolitionist, underground railroad member/worker what have you helped free the slaves
