The first European to discover Australia's northern coast is believed to have been Willem Jansz, also known as Willem Janszoon.
Willem Jansz departed for the East Indies on 18 December 1603, commanding the "Duyfken". His task was to seek other trade possibilities. He reached the coast of western New Guinea on 18 November 1605, then crossed the Arafura Sea into the Gulf of Carpentaria, on Australia's north coast. On 26 February 1606, Jansz became the first recorded European to step foot on Australia's shores at the Pennefather River, near where the Queensland town of Weipa now stands, on the western shore of Cape York Peninsula.
Jansz charted 320 kilometres of the coastline before returning to the Netherlands. However, he was of the opinion that his landing point was part of New Guinea, and Dutch maps reflected this error for many years.
The east coast of Australia was first explored by Captain James cook in 1770.
The ship that discovered Australia was called the Duyfken and came from Holland. This Dutch vessel sighted Australia's coast in 1606.
He discovered North America.
James Cook did not discover Australia. He was the first to chart the eastern coast, doing so in 1770, when he was 41 years old, but Australia was first "discovered" by Dutch explorer Willem Jansz in 1606.
No, he sailed first to the southeatsern corner of Australia. The first person that could be said to have discovered the west coast of Australia would be Dirk Hartog in 1616.

Yes, the discovery of Australia and Tasmania by the Europeans was quite different. Cape York, in Australia's far north, was first discovered by Willem Jansz in 1606, although he believed it to be part of New Guinea at the time. The west coast of Australia was next to be discovered, by Dirk Hartog, who made his discovery in 1616. James Cook is wrongly credited with discovering Australia. Cook was the first European explorer to sail up the east coast of Australia, doing so in 1770. Meanwhile, Abel Tasman discovered Van Diemen's Land, later renamed Tasmania, in 1642.
Three different people: many different discoveries. James Cook: * The Hawaiian Islands * Cook was the first to sight and chart Australia's east coast, but he did not discover Australia * Cook was the first to circumnavigate New Zealand, but he did not discover it Charles Sturt: * Sturt discovered that the Murrumbidgee River flows into the Murray River * He discovered that the Darling River flows into the Murray * He discovered that the Murray flows to the southern coast * He explored and discovered parts of what is now called the Simpson Desert Edward Eyre:* Eyre discovered Lake Hindmarsh and Mount Remarkable in South Australia * He discovered excellent countryside just north of Adelaide and rich, alluvial soil around what is now Hutt River * Eyre was the first to make the crossing from South Australia's coast to Albany in Western Australia: in doing so, he discovered what the interior of Australia and the Nullarbor Plain looked like
