Basically, the rich got richer and the poor got poorer. The elites of the conquered areas benefitted from integration into the economy and the trading networks of the empire. In Tome it was the patricians and the equites who benefitted the most.. The former were aristocrats who were large landowners. The latter were merchants, bankers, moneylenders and investors in shipping and mining. Some enterprising people (often freedmen) also became wealthy.
