India achieved independence from colonial rule on August 15, 1947. August 15 is, therefore, celebrated every year as the anniversary of our Independence Day. After attaining independence, a Constituent Assembly was set up to draft a constitution for the country. This constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950, when India became a Republic. January 26 is, therefore, celebrated as the anniversary of India's Republic Day. The Republic Day is an occasion to project India's strengths, its cultural heritage and its sense of unity in diversity. Traditionally, the celebrations start with an address to the nation by the President of India on the eve of the Republic Day. On the morning of January 26, the president reviews a parade in New Delhi in which different wings of the Indian armed and paramilitary forces participate. This is followed by groups of children and then folk dances and performances from states throughout the country. Similar celebrations are carried out at state and district levels as well. Three days later, a "Beating the Retreat" ceremony takes place to close the Republic Day celebrations, in which bands of the three wings of the armed forces play traditional patriotic tunes. The Republic Day will be celebrated in a similar manner this year.
