Zachary Taylor was in the army for 40 years, from 1808 until 1848.

Dwight Eisenhower from in the army from 1915 until 1948 which is 33 years of service. He was a West Point Military Academy cadet for four years before he entered the army, so you might say he was in the military for 37 years.

These two were the only true career military men to become president.

Ulysses S, Grant went to West Point for 4 years and served in the army from 1843-1854 , quit the service, and came back when the Civil War began and served from 1861 to 1869 for a total of about 23 years.
