The Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini, invaded the modern day Ethiopia in 1936 and formed the short-lived colony of Italian East Africa along with Italian Somaliland and Eritrea. The colony produced it's own banknotes in denominations of 50,100,500 and 1000 lire in 1938, using the same design as the Italian notes but with the overprint "Serie Speciale Africa Orientale Italiana". The notes only lasted three years until 1941 when the British liberated Africa.

While his Facism was uniquely Italian, he created general principles that would be imitated by others such as Hitler. His conversion of Italy into a Facist state was also signicant in its attacks on civil and political rights. He is also significant for his invasions of Ethiopia, Albania, and for prompting the Axis invasion of Greece. He is notable for bringing Italy into the Axis alliance as well.
