The Santa Maria was the flagship of the 1492 Columbus expedition to the New World. On December 25, 1492 it was destroyed as it ran aground on a coral reef.

The Nina and the Pinta were small sailing vessels. These ships sank because of storms that were encountered in the Atlantic Ocean. Due to their size the ships were unable to handle the massive amounts of water that was encountered on board.
Because the ship ran aground off the present-day site of Môle Saint-Nicolas, Haiti on December 25, 1492, and was lost. Timbers from the ship were later used to build Môle Saint-Nicolas, which was originally called La Navidad (Christmas) because the wreck occurred on Christmas Day.
