In my opinion the US has the best military overall as their only losses in wars is when they chose to cease fire i.e. Vietnam. The ragtag colonists along with help from France (losses most battles) beat what was then a military powerhouse of England. The US dropping the atomic bombs on Japan. Caused Japan a country that had values from the Bushido such as to never surrender to actually surrender.

US and China has the best military in the world. But if the two countries are in a war, i would say that china will win. sure, US has superior navy and air power, but to win a war (total control of the other country) require large amount of manpower, which United States lacks. The Chinese Army has 325 million (not counting the Chinese volunteer force) active troop (total US population in 2009 is about 300 million). sure US can pass a military draft to call upon males 18 year-35(i think), but is still not enough. if you count in all the allies, the former Soviet Union (ally w/ china) has the best tanks which can be deploy and roll into Washington within day with the help of the Chinese army. the British Royal air force, and the Japanese imperial Navy can't do little but watch US fall.

China does have the largest army but to roll the Russian tanks (which are no longer the best) within a day is laughable. They have to get here first and the air and sea belongs to the U.S. A landwar would probably be fought across the entire Euro-Asian area and possibly spread to WWIII. God forbid that!

I think you have to factor in that even if a landwar became the end result and even if China got to our shores, past our Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard, Coast Guard, and our cops, they would still have to deal with the Crips, Bloods, Neo-Nazi's, all the mafias, the rednecks and all the other militant groups and all the other Americans that own guns. They won't be giving up their land easily.

If your looking for the prefect military you want the US funding and technology, British training and china's size.

The British army. Especially the Scottish Divisions

USA. because we have had tons of wars never backed out except in the jungles of Vietnam.

  • Note that nuclear capability is not taken into account. This listing is purely a "numbers game" meant to spark debate and including such game-changers as nuclear weapons would clearly defeat the purpose of such an experiment. In any case, most any nation going to war would more than likely refrain from using such destructive warfare being that since the atomic bombs dropped in 1945, no nation has utilized this form of warfare for at least 60+ years despite there being a good amount of conflicts since then and more nuclear powers at play in the world. If there is a World War 3, it will most likely still be of the conventional sort. The comparisons here are for consideration in a "straight-up" war based solely on a nation's capabilities from land, sea and through the air with other statistics covering the logistical and financial aspects of waging such a campaign
  • Rank 1-10 Observations: The United States (GFP formula value of 0.184) remains the undisputed leader of our list thanks to their staying "active" in global hotspots, showcasing the world's largest navy and continuing to poor in gobs of money into defense. Our formula sees China edge out Russia but only by the slimmest of margins (0.238 versus 0.241 respectively) with an edge in available manpower and financial capital. France (0.636) and Germany (0.672) are relative equals for the most part but the GFP formula gives a slight edge to France thanks to an aircraft carrier and capable navy as well as a bump in defense spending. Brazil (0.756) is the most powerful South American country on the list thanks to available manpower and a capable navy. Japan (0.920) is a "sleeper" power that sneaks into the top ten with a good navy, strong logistical infrastructure and capital.
  • Rank 11-20 Observations: The formula provides for a good disparity between North and South Korea, placing South well-ahead of the North thanks to better infrastructure and capital. Mexico's placement this high on the list is interesting to note - it scored a good balance across the board in all major categories. Israel finally gets a proper placement on this year's list - just out of the top ten - sporting a strong land army with equally strong training, modern equipment and recent combat experience.
  • Rank 21-30 Observations: No surprises here. A basic collection of modern armies of generally equal strengths.
  • Rank 31-42 Observations: The bottom of the list features two rebuilding nations (Iraq and Afghanistan) as well as two "recovering" nations (Georgia and Lebanon) along with powers that generally stay relatively quiet.

The American military is of course the all round best, it has the size, the technology, the training and the funding. With over 6.3 billion dollars annually spent on the US army, navy and air force it has the funding to sustain a large, well equipped and well trained force.

For a more specific answer the question must be broken down:

1) Size

2) Training / professionalism

3) Technology / equipment

4) Doctrine

Size

China of course has the biggest and India the second biggest, but neither country has the budget to sustain a well equipped and well trained force of that size.

Training / professionalism

Most western countries have a very well trained and professional military, France, USA, Germany, UK and not forgetting some Eastern countries like Israel. All countries have different regiments trained to different levels of professionalism, so we must break down an army into tiers. The British army has arguably the best trained, they are world renown for having the best through most tiers but of course maintain a relatively small force.

Technology / equipment

The US, France, Germany and UK have all the latest military tech. Some countries exceed in certain areas, for example; aruably Germany or the UK have the best MBT's while the UK and US have the all round most advanced navy, and the US has the most advanced air force. The US rises above the rest mostly because all round it has among the best equipment and lots of it.

Doctrine

Doctrine donates how a countries military is structured, how well each tier is trained, the type of tanks, small arms, aircraft, submarines, aircraft carriers, size, etc. all the different aspects of a military, for example:

The British army has a very big emphasis on fitness / stamina. It maintains a small force but very well trained and equipped.

The US has adopted a very dynamic doctrine which mostly focuses on an attrition strategy. It has a very large army but has trained all of it's soldiers to the point where the combination of size, training and technology will overcome any enemy force.

Israel has a very unique doctrine, it focuses heavily on troop survivability. Israel have developed weapons which can shoot round corners and tanks which have the engine in the front, thus favoring the lives of the crew over important parts of the tank.

Each doctrine is suited to fit a countries location, size, population, budget and it's politics.

So the question "who has the best military" is not as straight forward as one might expect.

If by 'best military' you mean the most effective in winning wars, then the answer is the United States, by a wide margin. The US has overwhelming nuclear superiority over every other country, the world's largest Air Force and Navy (the only other country with a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is France; they have 1, the US has 11), a large Army, and the world's most feared and respected warriors, the U.S. Marine Corps. Altho China has an army some 5x the size of the American army, the Chinese Army is also used to keep a large part of their unskilled population employed, which limits their effectiveness and motivation.
