Any trauma to the body can cause depression, including operations, even simple ones. My personal opinion is that it's because activity sharply decreases, and if you are usually exercising you lose a lot of the 'feel good' chemicals. Even if you aren't an athlete injuries disrupt the body's natural processes and stress of any sort can exacerbate depression.
