As I sat thinking about your question I couldn't come up with an invention that truly helped Polo. It is possible that he used a compass that his father would have brought back from China on one of his trips. After Polo returned to Venice, Italy from his years in China he did write a book and it is possible that the invention of the printing press would have also helped by getting his story out. He came before some of the inventions and improvements in sailing that would have helped him and his maps would have been very basic not showing items that explorers found later on ( including himself). Gunpowder that he brought back from China may have helped him since he did fight in a war after he returned to Italy.
It was the invention of the printing press that helped Marco Polo gain wider circulation with his travels. This machine allowed for him to circulate his journals further.

One of things that Marco Polo discovered in China was the invention of woodblock printing. When he came back to Europe in 1295, he brought this knowledge with him.
