In May 1864, Grant ordered Sherman to destroy the Army of Tennessee under Joe Johnston, while he himself would attend to the Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee.
Sherman's campaign involved a slow progress from Chattanooga to Atlanta, with a big battle at the latter city, followed by the March to the Sea (Savannah), ending in December. The Army of Tennessee had meanwhile pushed North towards Nashville, hoping to distract Sherman from his March, but they came to grief at Franklin and then at Nashville itself.
Grant's Overland Campaign in Virginia started badly, with defeats at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Coldharbour, before he settled down to a long siege at Petersburg, lasting right into 1865.
