The earliest railroads did not have a locomotive- there were several that were built using gravity and mules to moves cars on a track. Among the earliest that actually used a locomotive was the Granite Railway in Quincy Mass (1826). It was 3 miles long, and used to move granite stone from a quarry.

Horse-drawn rail roads on wooden and, later iron, rails have been in use in Europe since the 1550's .

The first steam driven rail road was used to haul iron and workers to and from an ironworks in Wales in 1802.

The first rail road to carry passengers was The Stockton and Darlington Railway Line, operating between these two English towns from 1814.

George Stephenson's famous "Rocket" steam engine operated on the Liverpool to Manchester Railway from 1825.
