Australia's climate is particularly suited to grasslands. However, the grassland that used to proliferate right through from southeast Queensland down into South Australia and Victoria has been greatly reduced by farming and development. True grassland is now the most threatened habitat in Australia, with only 1% of the original habitat surviving. Some of this may be found in the subalpine regions of the Kosciuszko National Park, from the southern edge of the ACT, southwest across the border of NSW and Victoria, to the Mt Buffalo and Alpine National Parks. Tropical tallgrass is found in areas of the Top End and northern Queensland, and some degree of grassland remains in the mid-west of NSW and Victoria, and the southern areas of South Australia.
