Actively playing, there are only about 5 or 6. The answer depends on how you define African-American. If you mean black players, the answer is a much higher number, but because most of the active black players were born in Canada or Europe, the number of Americans is significantly smaller. In total there are about 15 African Americans who have been drafted by or played in the NHL. (Val James, Mike McHugh, Donald Brashear, Mike Grier, Gerald Coleman, Dustin Byfuglien, Francis Boullion, Kyle Okposo, Greg Mauldin, Robbie Earl, J.T. Brown, John Carter, Austin Levi, Emerson Etem, and Cristoval Nieves). The number of black players (all nationalities) is 106 as of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. The wages of men in the 1800s: The average wage earner only made $16.00 a week. Some traders only made two, three, four, or six dollars a week the women really weren't allowed to work except rare cases way back then *** The value of money was much different in the 1800's where a penny was considered a large amount of money and people often worked for a week to make a nickle or dime (at least in North America) It was not until the early to mid 1900's that money began increasing in deomination rapidly such as $5, $10, $100, $1000, $10000 etc. ---- Women didn't generally getwages in the 1800's..those were highly sexist times
