Many people say different things, some say from Iberia (northern Spain) as Gaels believed they were descendants of Milesians, sons of Míl Espáine.
Others believe that the Irish descend from a sunken island off the west coast of Ireland, called Tír na nÓg or goes by many names like Hy Brasil. I tend to believe the second one.
Recent DNA studies tend to support the first one, however.
Recent genetic research has revealed that the Irish, along with the other "Celts" along the Atlantic coast, are descended from settlers who came from the Iberian peninsula after the last Ice Age. The Y-chromosome haplogroup is called R1b and is found among the Basques as well as many NW European males. See Oppenheimer's Blood of the Isles.
The people of Ireland came from many different countries. The first people to come to Ireland are believed to have come from Spain, by sea. Other places people to Ireland from came from Britain, France and Scandanavia, and many other places.
It is believed that the first people to live in Ireland came from northern Spain. Since then, people have come to Ireland from other parts of Europe and contributed to becoming the Irish people of today.
