Many of them wore what they all ready had and rather haphazard until congress, but there wasn't a single standard rule. Some veterans reused French and Indian war and various colonies had their own uniform style. The colors on uniforms was less style and more for the purpose of identifying friends from foe through the cannon and gun smoke.
