When the early settlers came to Maine in the 1600s they noted that all the forests were rich with towering white pine trees (some said to be as tall as 250 feet) which were used to fuel the ever growing shipbuilding industry throughout the 1800s until iron was used. At that point, they made Maine famous once again by fueling the logging industry. The forests here are still rich with these trees, thus earning Maine "the Pine Tree State."
The Official reason cited by the Maine Legislature is that it is named for the ancient French province of the same name.
