They got evacuated just before the war had started - 1st Sep 1939 .
Some travelled with teachers , or walked miles or wen't on a carrige or in a old car .
They new war was coming a year before it had even began because German troops had lost !! :D
Operation Pied Piper the evacuation of children and some adults began on 1 September 1939, prior to the Battle of Britain. The Ministry of Health officially evacuated more than 1.5 million children, elderly, disabled, mothers with babies and teachers.
Other cycles of official evacuation and re-evacuation occurred from the South and East coast during June 1940 when a seaborne invasion by the Nazi Germans was expected. The Blitz began in September 1940.
The children were sent to places such as Dorset, Somerset, Devon, Cornwall, all of Wales, The Northwest Lake District, the South Coast (transferred later again) and the Scotland Highlands. The bulk of the children did not get to go home until the end of the war. See related link below.
