After finally purchasing the Louisiana Territory, and two weeks before inauguration day Jefferson asked Lewis, in January of 1803, to go on the journey. Lt. William Clark would offer to join Lewis on the expedition weeks later on October 13, 1803 at Camp Dubois (in present-day Indiana). They then named their team the "Corps of Discovery."

Jefferson chose his personal secretary, and neighbor Meriwether Lewis, to lead the exploration of the new US territory. When he needed a partner, however, to help his expedition, Lewis agreed to have William Clark to share the leadership of the exploration of the Louisiana Territory. Sharing the command of the mission, was at the time, a sign of humbleness and Lewis' intelligence to share the duties was a correct one. Therefore, history records that the Lewis and Clark expedition explored the Louisiana Purchase.
