They were never released. The Americans and other allied forces had to get them free by killing the Japanese at the POW Camps in the Philippines. The ones who were taken to Japan and survived were released after Japan surrendered but they had to wait for the Americans to get all the help they needed and to be returned to their nations.
Correction: Not all of the prisoners were American, not all were Phillipino. MOST were Australian and British. There WERE camps, such as the famous raid on Cabanatuan (read Ghost Soldiers by Hampton Sides) that were taken and prisoners freed by joint Phillipine and Allied troops.

The Bataan Death March took place in 1942 in order to transfer Filipino and American prisoners of war during World War II by the Imperial Japanese Army. The march went from Mariveles, Bataan to San Fernando, Pampanga and was 80 miles long.
