The Star Spangled Banner came from the poem "Defence of Fort McHenry" written by Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British Royal Navy in 1812. On September 20th, 1814 both the Baltimore Patriot and The American printed the song for the first time. The song's popularity increased, and its first public performance took place in October, when Baltimore actor Ferdinand Durang sang it at Captain McCauley's tavern.
Francis Scott Key, an American, is usually credited for writing the Star Spangled Banner. However......what Key wrote was a poem called The Defense of Fort McHenry. The music, written by John Stafford Smith, was from The Anacreotnic Song; a British drinking song popular in the US with various lyrics. Later, Smith's music was combined with Key's lyrics to make the Star Spangled Banner.
A man named Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner outside of an American fort; Fort McHenry in the War of 1812. However, it was not until 1931 when President Herbert Hoover made it the national anthem.
