The German Democratic Republic, known in English as East Germany, was created by the Soviet Union in the Soviet Zone of occupied Germany and the Soviet sector of occupied Berlin in 1949. In 1990 its re-established states joined the Federal Republic of Germany.
German Democratic Republic, often just referred as East Germany, which is not politically correct nowadays since there is only one Germany, was founded in 1949 after World War II.

East and West. You presume you refer to the divided Germany. The Federal Republic of Germany (West) and the German Democratic Republic (East). The East was called "Democratic" but was all but that.
Other wise known as west Germany
the federal republic of Germany
This question makes the incorrect supposition that country of West Germany does not exist anymore. West Germany was the common-person's name for the country officially called the Federal Republic of Germany. When Democratic Republic of Germany (East Germany) collapsed in 1989, the Federal Republic simply absorbed the territory. Since there were no longer two Germanies, people stopped calling the Federal Republic of Germany as "West Germany" and simply as "Germany". However, the government of the Federal Republic of Germany did not change in any meaningful way (aside from having more territories).
